History

Quincy Mining Company was formed in 1846 to mine the Pewabic lode, becoming one of the major producers in Copper country. It installed 9 shafts in the Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The mine developed the nickname of “Old Reliable” for a continuous dividend record of 49 years. It produced 424,000 tons of copper plus some silver. After 92 years the mine curtailed operation in September of 1945, ending all mining on the Pewabic lode. It was closed but the site is preserved as a cooperating site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The Quincy Mine is currently owned by the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, a non-profit ownership, which boasts the Nordberg Steam Hoist, the largest steam-powered hoist engine ever built and is on display at the museum. Also available are guided tours, a gift shop, trolley rides to the top of Quincy Hill.
